article imageWoman allergic to hip implant

By Owen Weldon     May 17, 2013 in Health
Paula Spurlock started to experience itching and pain all over her body, and it was due to an allergic reaction to the hip implant she received.
According to ABC, Spurlock, 50, experienced itching, pain and migraines for almost two years before a PET scan revealed her right hip lit up. Back in 2008 a metal joint was implanted in that hip.
According to 6ABC, Spurlock had to go in for another surgery to have it replaced, because one of the implants contained cobalt, which was causing her to have an allergic reaction. Small particles of it was entering into her bloodstream after it wore off.
According to Daily Mail, the metal joint was replaced with a ceramic joint.
Spurlock said that the itching was so bad that she wanted to crawl out of her skin. She said that she wants more hip patients to take from her experience and learn from it, and ask if they can be tested for allergies before they have their operation.
