The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights posted a video to YouTube on Wednesday that shows members of the jihadist group Jabhat Al-Nusra executing supporters of the regime of President Bashar Al-Assad.
Warning: Graphic content
The chilling video was reportedly shot in the eastern Syrian province of Deir al-Zor. It shows nine blindfolded men kneeling in front of the camera while a masked man reads out a statement.
The masked man says: "Al-Nusra Front's sharia court in the eastern area of Deir al-Zor has sentenced these apostate soldiers to death, because of their massacres against our people in Syria."
The man then proceeds to shoot the prisoners with a pistol. He kills them one by one with bullets to the backs of their heads.
The Huffington Post notes that the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights did not say whether the victims were combatants. However, Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the organization, told AFP that they believe they are supporters of the Assad regime.
According to the Times of Israel, the jihadists claim that the executions were in retaliation for killings perpetrated by government forces, specifically the killing of Sunni civilians in the coastal city of Bannias in May. The Syrian Observatory of Human Rights reportedly estimates the number of people killed in the Bannias massacre at about 145.
Jabhat Al-Nusra or Al-Nusra Front, is a jihadist organization fighting against the Al-Assad regime in Syria. According to The Huffington Post, the United States has designated the group "terrorist."
Al-Nusra Front's leader Abu Mohammed Al-Jolani, pledged the group's allegiance to Al-Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri last month. The act reportedly angered other Islamist groups fighting Assad's regime in Syria who do not see it as being in the strategic interest of the struggle in Syria.
The chilling video comes soon after another which appears to show a rebel leader cutting out the heart of an Assad loyalist and biting it. Another recent video shows rebels from the Raqqa province executing three alleged government military officers.
Analysts say the recent string of disturbing videos from Syria are likely to raise questions about recent US moves to help the rebels topple the Assad regime and end the war quickly.
The Huffington Post reports that jihadist websites say the footage was filmed in 2012.
Al-Nusra has been involved in suicide attacks in the Syrian war and it has the reputation of being the best equipped rebel force in the Syrian conflict.
According to the Times of Israel, the Syrian Observatory of Human Rights says about 80,000 people have been killed in the Syrian conflict.
