Bogot - 'La Candelaria' corresponds to the site of the founding of the city of Bogotá in Colombia. From the beginning, it was the administrative center of the country and remains to this day as one of the best preserved colonial neighborhoods in Latin America.
The district of La Candelaria is the historic and cultural heart of Bogotá. In this neighbourhood, the oldest in the city, surrounding the large Bolivar Square (Plaza de Bolivar), are the buildings that are home to the main institutions of the capital city and the national government. These are the beautiful National Cathedral, the Nariño Palace, seat of the presidency and the presidential residence, the National Capitol, seat of the Congress, and the Palace of Justice, seat of Supreme Court of Colombia.
Beyond the large square, on the lower slopes of Guadalupe Hill, lies a neighborhood of colonial houses which in ancient times was mostly residential, but gradually, and with the purpose of preservation, came to house institutions and cultural centers such as theaters, concert halls, libraries and important religious, historical and art museums.
Most of the streets of La Candelaria are narrow, covered with cobblestones and lined with old colonial style buildings with ornate wooden balconies, grated windows, elaborate carved doors, and red-tiled roofs and eaves.
