article imageJason Spezza now skating with team as Senators expect him back

By Marcus Hondro     May 12, 2013 in Sports
First there was news out of Ottawa that center Jason Spezza skated twice with the Black Aces, the call-ups that skate separate from the regular team. However, today, Sunday, May 12, Spezza skated with his teammates for the first time since his injury.
After the practice with the regular team today Spezza, 29, told media that it was a big step for him. He said it didn't mean he would play at all this season, but that getting to this stage was an accomplishment. However, the Senators management have said he'll likely return to the line-up sometime in round 2.
Spezza played 5 games at the top of the season and then had herniated disc problems. He had major surgery on his back and for much of the season was off the ice entirely. A big part of the Ottawa offence, Spezza was 34-50-84 in 80 games last season.
On Friday, Sens GM Bryan Murray told Ottawa's Team 1200 AM that Spezza, then still practicing with the Black Aces, was "skating much harder, competing much better and feeling much stronger,"
After beating the Montreal Canadiens in 5 games in round 1, Ottawa will play the Pittsburgh Penguins in round 2.
