Clifton - Authorities shut down several blocks surrounding a Northern New Jersey store while they detonated a suspected explosive device found in some second hand merchandise. In the end, it was believed the device was a movie prop.
Renee Dimitros owns the New 4 U Thrift and Vintage Shop, in Clifton, N.J., She and her husband, Mike Hamadat, were surprised to find a suicide-vest like device purchased at an auction.
Dimitros had recently purchased 11 storage units at a local auction in Paterson with the hopes of selling them in the thrift shop. The vest was found inside one of the storage lockers.
Initially, the couple did not think it was real. Hamadat began to fiddle with the device, but lights began to flash, reported ABC News.
"But when he started picking it up, and I noticed that it looked like a vest," Dimitros said. "And I seen lights flashing, and I could see that it had these four cylinders in the front. I said 'Mike, that's a bomb. That is a bomb. Put it down! Put it down! Put it down!"
The couple immediately called 911. Authorities arrived quickly and closed off a several city blocks while they handled the device. They also closed off a portion of the normally busy Route 46 in both directions.
It was detonated about 12:30 a.m. by the Passaic County Bomb Squad in the middle of Lakeview Avenue.
Authorities said it did appear to be a prop and there were no explosives within the vest.
“We treated it as if it were (an explosive),” Clifton Police Sgt. Robert Bracken said, reported New Jersey Star-Ledger. “But it was not an explosive device. All indications are it was a movie prop.”
According to NBC news, the storage lockers originally came from California. The previous owner had been a music mixer for movies out on the west coast. He had shipped the lockers back east, but then passed away before he claimed them, reported WPIX News.
No one was injured or in any danger, said authorities, but “All precautionary measures were taken,” said Bracken.
