article imageGavin & Stacey becomes US & Them, as Fox orders full series

Fox is to remake the hit Welsh comedy series Gavin & Stacey and has commissioned a full series from its creators Ruth Jones and James Corden.
The American version of the show, which has been renamed US & Them, will be executive-produced by Jones and Corden and Steve Coogan (I’m Alan Partridge).
Previously, NBC and then ABC requested scripts for a possible US version of the Barry Island original, but both networks subsequently passed on ordering a pilot to be made. Subsequently, Fox ordered a script, then a pilot (when it was called Family & Friends) and now a full 13-episode first season.
Speaking to Wales Online following the announcement, Jones – who played Stacey’s best friend, Nessa, in the British version of the series – commented that, “I’m absolutely thrilled about it. I’ve been following it through all the stages of the development.”
Since moving on from Gavin & Stacey, Jones has co-created another successful Wales-based series, the comedy-drama Stella. Set in the fictional Welsh Valleys town of Pontyberry, it stars Jones in the eponymous role.
Stella is produced by Tidy Productions for Sky and it’s second season has just completed airing on Sky 1. Jones is currently filming season 3, where she spoke to the Welsh media about US & Them:
“I don’t think there’s a golden rule about what translates across from the UK. We can only see what happens. But it’s a great script that’s been written by (series writer) David Rosen,” she said.
According to a report on BBC Radio 1’s Newsbeat, “original production company, Baby Cow Productions, is working on the series along with BBC Worldwide”.
Alexis Bledel (Violet & Daisy) and Jason Ritter (The Event) will play the leads made famous by Joanna Paige (Doctor Who 50th-anniversay special) and Matthew Horne (Lesbian Vampire Killers). Further casting has yet to be announced, including who will play Nessa and Gavin’s best friend, Smithy, played by Corden (Craig Owens in Doctor Who) in the original.
