On May 4, Terry McDermott, the runner-up winner of the third season of “The Voice,” chatted via telephone with Digital Journal’s Markos Papadatos.
The Scottish-born singer-songwriter opened up about his new single “Pictures,” as well as his musical plans for the future. “The song is a snapshot of a past love that can haunt you,” he said. “My co-writer and I wrote it in half a day, so it happened very quickly. We had a lot of fun making it.”
“Pictures” peaked at No. 1 on the iTunes rock charts. “That was such an honor. We watched it go from No. 52 on the previous night and we woke up on the next day and it climbed to No. 25. After a performance at the Yahoo music studio, it hit No. 1. It is doing quite well. I would like to thank my fans since they have surprised me. I am thrilled that my fan-base has stayed with me in enormous numbers. They have been fantastic to me,” he said.
During his tenure on “The Voice,” he was coached by country music mega-star Blake Shelton. “Blake is the gentleman that you see on television. He has been a great help off the show as well. I am very proud to represent him on ‘Team Blake.’ He really looked after us. Cassadee Pope was on my team and we became fast friends. We both had a common rock background and we had a lot of stories to tell,” Terry shared.
Terry noted that he enjoys recording as an independent musician. “As an independent artist, I can put out a song or an EP every couple of months and that way I can consistently bring my music to the audience. I have a great team around me and they know what they are doing,” he acknowledged.
This past April, Terry played a sold-out show at New York City’s Gramercy Theatre. “I love playing New York,” he exclaimed. “New York is the first place that I ever played in America and that was ten years ago. I fell in love with the city very hard. I promised myself that I would never want to go there as a tourist. I want to go there with a purpose: to work and to play. The crowd at the show was tremendous and at one point, they were singing the words of my single back to me. I love the quality and the intimacy of Gramercy Theatre.”
Terry reveled that he would love to do a duet with Cassadee Pope, who was the winner of his season of “The Voice.” “We had a couple of good ideas and I would like to do a duet with Cassadee at some point,” he said. “That would be tremendous. I would also like to sing something someday with Stevie Nicks since I am a huge fan of Fleetwood Mac.”
