Today, rapper Macklemore and his music partner Ryan Lewis became the first duo in Billboard's 55-year history to have their first two singles hit #1 on the Hot 100 chart.
Earlier this year, their song, "Thrift Shop," ruled the chart for six consecutive weeks. It contained a powerful message about not wasting your money on expensive designer clothes and was touted as the biggest hit of the year by Rolling Stone Magazine. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis followed this with another catchy tune with a positive theme, "Can't Hold Us." The phenomenal video for the follow-up single was released on April 17. It contained footage filmed on six continents and was predicted by Digital Journal to become a huge success. As mentioned in that article, "Can't Hold Us" is the perfect song to secure this duo's place as a major player in pop music. It features guest singer Ray Dalton and trumpet player Owuor Arunga. Both hits are from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' independently produced album "The Heist," which reached #1 on iTunes within hours of being released on October 9, 2012 with no mainstream promotion or support.
And so we have it. Today, "Can't Hold Us" reached the top spot on the Hot 100, and thus the duo has made music history. No other duo has had their first two singles reach the top spot on the Billboard chart. They deserve every accolade - kudos for their creativity and innovation. They are an inspiration to independent musicians everywhere. This writer wishes them much continued success.
