Two new characters are to join the third series of the hit comedy-drama series created by Ruth Jones for Sky, it has been announced.
Patrick Baladi (The Office) and Clare Hingott (The Indian Doctor) will appear in the third season of the hit series, which is scheduled for a 2014 broadcast on Sky 1.
Baladi will play Michael Jackson, an English lawyer who moves to Stella’s home town of Pontyberry. Indications are that he could be a new love interest for Stella (Ruth Jones), who parted with both her lovers, Sean and Rob, during season 2.
On his joining Stella, Baladi told Sky, “[Ruth] is a brilliant writer of character, warmth and wit and I’m delighted to be part of the show. It’s an honest, unique and a refreshingly rare bit of fun.”
Details pertaining to Hingott’s character, meanwhile, have not yet been released. However, TV Wise reports that hers “is a recurring role”.
Stella’s co-creator and series producer, David Peet, commented that he was “over the moon that Patrick is joining the cast. Ruth and I are huge fans of his and we’re hoping he finds a big warm welcome in the heart of Pontyberry.”
As well as taking the lead role in Stella, Jones is the co-creator and one of the writers of the Welsh Valleys-set drama. Prior to its launch in 2012, she was best known for playing Nessa in the hit BBC sitcom Gavin & Stacey, which she co-created with James Corden. When viewers joined Pontyberry at the start of season 1, Stella’s teenage daughter, Emma – played by Doctor Who semi-regular Catrin Stewart – was pregnant with her boyfriend Sunil’s baby. Sunil is played by Rory Girvan, who recently revealed his ambition to play James Bond, when Daniel Craig hangs up his blue trunks.
Stella completed its successful second-season run on Sky 1 in March but, before it even aired, Sky announced that they had already ordered a Christmas special for 2013 and a third season for 2014.
