Leeds - A rally by the English Defence League protested against the proposed development of yet another mosque, this time in Moortown, Leeds.
According to West Yorkshire Police, around 150 EDL supporters attended the demonstration, which passed off largely peacefully.
Only around 120 attended a counter-protest organised by the anti-English UAF (which is backed by British Prime Minister David Cameron).
West Yorkshire Police also mentioned that reports in some media that pig’s heads had been thrown were inaccurate.
However, the West Yorkshire Post reports that the police later admitted that it was in fact their own statement that was inaccurate and they issued a new statement saying, “Having viewed subsequent footage of the demonstration and spoken directly with officers involved we can confirm there was a pig’s head found on the floor in the crowd which was quickly removed by officers and disposed of.
“This was in addition to the latex mask.”
At the demo the EDL sang, “We’re coming down the road!” “We’re the famous EDL!” “I’m England ‘til I die!” and “No surrender to the Taliban!”
Local EDL organiser, Gail addressed the EDL rally saying, “As you can see today, no town or city centre and no singing to a lamppost in the car park, we are right in the heart of the community.” The community they were in was Moortown in Leeds, where, the Yorkshire Evening Post reported that UK Islamic Mission (UKIM) has plans to turn a disused pub into a centre with a public gym, IT suite, library, training facilities and a prayer room for up to 70 worshippers.
There have been more than 400 letters of objection against the proposal.
The EDL organiser believed that the community had been let down badly by the council and their voice had been silenced. “You have that Islamic centre one day, believe me in five, ten years time, you’re out of here.” She said.
