Stockholm - An explosion in an apartment in north-west Stockholm has killed three people and has caused a fire, forcing residents to be evacuated from the building. The motive for the blast may be murder.
The blast occurred early on Friday in the Hallonbergen neighborhood of Stockholm, in what is being described as a suspected case of murder by the Swedish media.
A fire followed the explosion and forced residents of the building to be evacuated shortly afterwards, at around 4:30 am (02:30 GMT).
A neighbor, Temesgen Essaias, who lived in the same entryway as the affected apartment told the media that he was awakened by the blast shortly after 4:30 am.
"I heard a noise, it wasn't really powerful but it woke me up. And then suddenly the ventilation fans stopped working. Then the neighbours came and said 'we need to leave, there's a fire'," said Essaias.
Extensive damage was caused by the explosion, including the smashing of windows in adjacent apartments.
Firefighters, forensics officers and a bomb squad arrived on the scene, and according to the Aftonbladet newspaper, the bodies of a man and two children were found among the debris.
Stockholm police spokesman Martin Sjöli told TT news agency, "We have three people dead in unclear circumstances, which makes it a murder investigation."
After the bomb squad had completed a sweep of the area and had failed to find any additional explosive devices, police spokesman Kjell Lindgren told the media, "Now the forensic investigators can go in and figure out what happened."
