article imageBig rise in worldwide tablet computer sales

By Tim Sandle     May 2, 2013 in Technology
Tablet computer sales increased substantially in the first quarter of 2013, growing by 142.4% worldwide., compared with the equivalent period in 2012.
The data about tablet computer sales comes from the analysts IDC, their figures suggest that more tablet computers were sold from January to March 2013 than in the entire first half of 2012.
The figures also reveal that of the 49.2 million tablets shipped in January, February and March Apple remains the dominant brand in the market, with a 58.1% share. Second on the list is Samsung, followed by ASUS (makers of the Nexus 7), then Amazon and Microsoft.
Since 2010, Apple's iPad has been in the top position, according to the Wall Street Journal. What is perhaps more interesting is the entry of Microsoft with its Surface tablet in fifth position, although this is with less than 2% of the market share. Microsoft shipped around 900,000 Surface units last quarter.
By the time the next report comes out, Sony will have launched the Xperia Tablet Z. Yet another player in a crowded market.
