An Alaskan man, who was with his family, ended up walking away with only minor injuries after he got into a hands-on scuffle with the animal.
On Sunday, Toby Burke, 48, with his wife Laura and their three kids went to the Alaskan Kasilof River Beach, where they decided to do some bird watching.
According to ABC, when Burke, who is a wildlife biologist for Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, said that him and his wife spotted the bear when through their telescopes, but didn't think anything of it because it was off in the distance. The bear eventually disappeared and Burke and his family turned around to continue their hike. Moments later the bear was approaching them.
According to Yahoo, Burke said that he knew it was do or die time when the bear headed towards him and his family.
According to Homer Tribune, the family tried to scare the bear off by making noises and waving their arms. Instead of leaving, the bear started to charge at them.
Burke said that this was a situation that playing dead wouldn't have worked, because the bear was half-starved and erratic. Burke said that he grabbed his scope attached to a 6-foot-long tripod but the scope ended up snapping after it ended up in the bear's mouth.
Burke was then left with a sharp shaft, and he used it to hit the bear in the face, in an attempt to scare it away. However, the bear still didn't budge and the tripod ended up being smacked right out of Burke's hands. Burke said it was at that point that he made physical contact with the bear. He said that he put up his arm but the bear clamped right down onto his forearm, and then he took his other arm and struck the bear's face.
Burke said that the entire thing last around several minutes, and the bear eventually just gave up and ran away. Burke only suffered minor bruises and scratches.
Burke's wife proceeded to call Alaska State Troopers and Alaska Wildlife Troopers to let them know that there was an erratic bear.
An investigation revealed that a female brown bear was acting erratically, and it was attacking a vehicle as well as a telephone pole, and eventually attacking a man who was walking on the beach.
Two troopers found the bear, after it approached them along the treeline, and that was when they shot the bear. The deceased bear was then released to a local charity.
