Rory Girvan, the English actor who stars in a Welsh comedy-drama series created by Ruth Jones, would like one day to play Ian Fleming’s famous British spy, 007.
“I wouldn't mind playing James Bond,” he said recently to Yahoo! TV. “One day, when it's the right time, I'd love to do it. “[However] if they want someone to play the young James Bond now, then I’m ready!”
To date, six actors have played the 007 film role: Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig. The current model, Daniel Craig, has appeared in three Bond movies so far, and is signed to appear in at least two more.
Girvan trained to be an actor at the UK’s National Youth Theatre and, in 2005, performed in their Soho Theatre production of Outright Terror Bold and Brilliant.
Currently, Girvan plays Sunil in the Sky 1 flagship comedy, Stella, which has been commissioned for a third season.
Ruth Jones (Gavin & Stacey) plays the eponymous role in a series she created and writes for. At the beginning of the first season, which aired in 2012, Girvan’s character, Sunil, becomes engaged to Stella’s daughter, Emma, who is expecting their baby.
The 25-year-old actor enjoys working in the theatre. “I like to play people that are nothing like me,” he said. “I always love theatre roles where I’ve played rough scallies. I love it, I think you can have so much fun with it and you can completely transform.”
To date, Rory Girvan has also appeared in the films Ticket (2008) and Broken (2012), and, earlier this year, played Sami in the second season of Kay Mellor’s BBC drama, The Syndicate.
Of his 007 ambitions, he says, “I’ve always practised those infamous lines in front of the mirror – and I still do it. I’ve tried to perfect ‘shaken, not stirred’ and, of course, I always practise, ‘The name’s Bond, James Bond.”’
In the meantime, Girvan hopes to return to the Welsh Valleys: Stella completed its second-season run on Sky 1 in March but, before it even aired, Sky announced that they had already ordered a Christmas special for 2013 and a third season for 2014.
