TNT has picked up a third season of "Dallas." 15 episodes have been ordered and will air early next year. There was originally talk that TNT was leaning toward bringing the show back this summer.
"Dallas has built a passionately loyal following with its expertly woven storylines, clever twists and turns, and numerous outstanding performances by a cast that spans generations," said Michael Wright, President/Head of Programming at TNT. "Although we said goodbye to Larry Hagman and his iconic character J.R. Ewing this year, Dallas has many more stories to tell and the Ewing clan will continue to honor J.R.'s memory by keeping it's audience surprised and delighted."
Many wondered if the show would go on after Hagman's death. According to EW, season 2 averaged 3.8 million viewers per episode including seven days of DVR playback and 1.4 million adults ages 18-49.
The episode featuring J.R.'s funeral garnered 4.9 million viewers, Pegasus News reports compared with the season 2 premiere which was watched by only 2.98 million viewers. This was a serious plummet from the show's return on June 13, 2012, which had close to seven million viewers.
Just days before the announcement that Dallas has been renewed for a third season, it was announced that a ruby adorned silver and gold belt buckle worn by Larry Hagman in his role as J.R. Ewing was being put up for auction in Los Angeles on May 5. The buckle, which has the initials "J.R." in the center is expected to fetch between $3,000 and $5,000.
Hagman's custom made leather director's chair from Dallas is also up for auction and is expected to get between $2,500 and $3,000. Dozens of J.R. Ewings cowboy hats are expected to sell for hundreds of dollars each.
The third season of Dallas is expected to start shooting again in early fall.
