article imageLiverpool's Suarez banned 10 games for biting, asks forgiveness

By Marcus Hondro     Apr 29, 2013 in Sports
Liverpool hot-tempered striker Luis Suarez was given a 10-match ban by the Football Assoc. for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic's arm in a match last week. Suarez, with two prior bans, won't appeal and asked for forgiveness on his Twitter account.
"I hope the people I offended last Sunday will grant me forgiveness and I again repeat my personal apology to Branislav," he tweeted. "While 10 games is clearly greater than those bans given in past cases where players have actually been seriously injured, I acknowledge my actions were not acceptable on the football pitch so I do not want to give the wrong impression by making an appeal."
Players are usually given a maximum of 3 games for violent conduct but in their written ruling, the FA Regulatory Commission report noted that biting an opponent was extremely rare and "shocking". The Commission said that a severe ban was warranted because it was their "...duty to discourage any players at any level from acting in such a deplorable manner or attempting to copy what they had seen on the television."
Luis Suarez: Third ban from FA Regulator Commission
The 26-year-old Uruguayan is not one for learning lessons, it seems, as he was banned in 2010 for seven games, again for biting, that time he bit PSV Eindhoven's Otman Bakkal on the neck. He's also received an 8 game ban last season for his racial abuse of Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.
His 10 game ban is considered severe and the consensus around the league is that it is Suarez' prior bans which made the FA react so harshly, though the FA said they did not take into account previous disciplinary actions against the striker.
After biting Ivanovic, Suarez remained in the game and in injury time scored the equalizer in a 2-2 draw. He will not get a chance to score again until his ban is over next September.
