Just a few kilometers from said golden beaches are many quaint, unspoiled and beautiful villages, and surrounding these villages many treasures can to be found.
Here are a few featured examples of what is available, but there is, of course, so much more on offer for your Spanish vacation.
Serranía de Ronda
, the mountaintop town in southern Spain is an absolute must. Perched quite literally on top of a hill, the town sprawls across a 120 meter gorge and offers not only amazing views, but also fascinating Roman and Moorish architecture and loads of history.
While there are several lovely hotels and bed & breakfasts available in the town itself, you could also stay in the small town of Montejaque, located only 15 kms from Ronda.
In this traditional small town, you can find Casa El Corchito, up in the Andalucian mountains and right on the edge of Grazalema Natural Park. Besides all the pleasures of local cuisine, you can enjoy a plethora of relaxing activities in the area including sports such as cycling, climbing and walking as well as cultural visits. There are also three natural parks close by to explore.
The bed & breakfast itself is located in an old Roman street in the historic part of the village
known as 'La Raspa'. Both guestrooms are en suite with views over the rocky garden, the relax pool and several terraces, to the surrounding mountains.
Owners Rob and Coby can help with all your touring requirements and questions and can also offer a delicious barbeque in the garden on request.
Visiting the exciting and historic city of Córdoba
is a great treat, especially in spring before the extreme heat of summer. Moorish and Roman architecture is to be seen everywhere, including this remarkable Roman Bridge, spanning the Guadalquivir river.
The local cuisine, entertainment and shopping is excellent and again, many excellent hotels are available for your stay. But how about staying in the countryside
outside the city?
Iznájar is located in Córdoba province, just over an hour's drive from the city, and close to this charming and traditional white village is a real rural treasure.
Hiding away among the olive groves is a 250-year-old traditional "Cortijo" (or farmhouse), which has been beautifully restored into a 5-bedroom rural bed & breakfast.
The views across the surrounding countryside from Cortijo la Haza are beautiful and you can even see as far as the Sierra de Nevada.
Many cosy spots are available for relaxation, including the terraces and the swimming pool.
The guest rooms have been beautifully renovated and include traditional Andalucian furniture and all have en suite facilities.
Jointly owned by Bernadette and Patriek, this lovely property offers more than breakfast. Patriek is a chef who combines international cuisine with a "Spanish twist", and you can enjoy a tasty dinner after a relaxing drink next to the pool.
Axarquía, east of Málaga
Going back down to the Costa del Sol, we can find a lovely area known as Axarquía
, just east of the city of Málaga. The name possibly traces back to the Arabic "Ash-sharquía", meaning "the eastern region".
This area extends both along the coast and also inland and the coastal towns make up the Costa del Sol Oriental.
A variety of small villages (including many of the famous white villages or towns of Andalucia
) are dotted around the area, including Comares.
Close to Comares is a beautiful renovated farmhouse
which has been converted into a welcoming bed & breakfast. Casa Colina offers lunches and dinners prepared daily from locally sourced produce, including fresh eggs from their own 12 hens and home-reared chickens. All meats used at Casa Colina are free range and wherever possible are organic.
Paul and Niki offer 4, individually styled suites with a drinks fridge and tea/coffee making facilities. Besides the B&B facilities, the Olive Suite is a self-contained apartment with double bedroom, shower/WC, kitchenette, living room with TV/DVD and a large private terrace for those wishing to be a little more independent.
And just look at that view:
The above is but a small selection of what is available throughout Spain in the way of both charming and rural bed & breakfast
accommodation. Come and visit the best of Spain!
