article imageVideo: Military training area in heart of ancestral Hawai'i

By Anne Sewell     Apr 23, 2013 in Environment
On the island of Hawai'i, right in the heart of ancestral lands, lies the Pohakuloa Training Area. Depleted uranium is present in this area, as well as at the Schofield Barracks on O'ahu. Something needs to be done to stop this.
Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) is located on the island of Hawai'i in the high plateau between Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and the Hualalai volcanic mountains. It includes a small military airstrip known as Bradshaw Army Airfield.
The video above discusses this area of Hawai'i and its significance to the people. It also discusses concerns about depleted uranium which is present at the Pohakuloa Training Center on Hawai'i Island and also at Schofield Barracks on O'ahu. We are introduced to the dangers of this depleted uranium and its effects not only on the troops being trained at this area, but also on the surrounding communities.
The people involved in making the video believe that additional and unbiased studies are warranted to understand the exposure hazard and resulting health risks from depleted uranium present on active training ranges.

We are also told of the many ancestral artifacts that are lying in this area, the history behind it and its meaning to the people of Hawai'i.
Also, Wikipedia tells us that, "Within the borders of the training area, ten different endangered species can be found. These include the native Hawaiian mint honohono (Haplostachys haplostachya) and the shrub 'kio'ele (Kadua coriacea). This area has more endangered species than any other US Army installation. The northeastern portion of the site near Mauna Kea provides habitat for the endangered bird Palila (Loxioides bailleui), for example."
"Several archaeological sites have been found in the training area, including the Bobcat Trail Habitation Cave, listed in the National Register of Historic Places."

One of the people we are introduced to in the video, Pua, says:
"For my relations and my friends here and beyond. This is the island that I live on, this is the land base that we consider to be sacred, that our kupuna our ancient ones knew was sacred and itʻs the heart of our island everyone, the geographic heart and itʻs being bombed everyday... Pohakuloa, I wish we could just chant it all away! Kalani, my husband is standing strong with the other warriors for us all, warriors rising! Those from Hawai'i Island, I hope youʻre watching this because this is where you live!"
