article imageStorm Thorgerson (1944-2013) — Wish You Were (Still) Here

By Alexander Baron     Apr 21, 2013 in Entertainment
Last week, Storm Elvin Thorgerson died at the age of 69. Who was he? He was a commercial artist, but not just any commercial artist.
It is said of Nile Rodgers that although you may not recognise the name, you will certainly have heard at least one of his songs. Something similar can be said of Storm Thorgerson, namely that although you may not have heard the name, you will certainly have seen at least one - probably many - of his designs. For during that brief but immortal epoch when albums ruled the world, Storm Thorgerson was one of the people who created the image that went with the sound.
Probably his best known work was the cover of The Dark Side Of The Moon for progressive rock band Pink Floyd. If you are of a younger generation and lead a sheltered life, two hundred years from now - if Man still exists - Pink Floyd will be regarded with the same reverence as are Beethoven and Bach today, in short, they are the classical music of the future.

Storm's website is still being maintained, so be sure to take a gander at his artwork. Be warned that not all of it is to everybody's taste, but the three record covers displayed here are classics: all are from Pink Floyd albums. And if you haven't heard all of these in full, check them out and other Seventies Rock on YouTube.
