Steven Moffat has today revealed the hitherto-withheld title for his season-finale episode of Doctor Who, the BBC’s flagship science-fiction drama series.
Seven of the eight titles were published last month, when the current batch of Doctor Who episodes commenced. However, Moffat held back the final-episode title as it revealed too much of what the story was about.
Written by Moffat himself, the concluding episode is called The Name of the Doctor. Directed by Saul Metzstein, it will see Matt Smith’s Eleventh Doctor and his companion Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman) joined by River Song (Alex Kingston). It will mark the first time Professor Song has appeared alongside Clara.
What's in a name?
Over the years, although referred to simply as the Doctor, the Time Lord from Gallifrey has been known by a number of other names. The most common, John Smith, is a pseudonym he's used on and off since the time Patrick Troughton played the Second Doctor in the mid to late 1960s.During Tom Baker's time as the Fourth Doctor, it was revealed by another Time Lord that his name was in fact Theta Sigma.
To his sworn enemies the Daleks, he is known by a number of names, including the Ka Faraq Gatri (which translates as the Bringer of Darkness or the Destroyer of Worlds) and the Predator. They also know him as the Oncoming Storm, as do another of his foes, the Draconians. More whimsically, the Chelonians know him as the Interfering Idiot!
To accompany publicity for the final episode, the BBC has released a movie-style poster, which includes the tagline “His secret revealed”.
This Saturday (21 April), Hide, by Neil Cross, marks the midway point for the eight episodes, with Stephen Thoimpson's Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS, Mark Gatiss's The Crimson Horror and Neil Gaiman's Nightmare in Silver to follow. The Name of the Doctor is scheduled for Saturday, 18 May.
All this year’s episodes form part of Doctor Who’s 50th anniversary. After a summer break, the series will return in the autumn with a number of specials.
