article imageChicago sinkhole eats up 3 cars, one while moving, two parked

By Marcus Hondro     Apr 18, 2013 in Odd News
A large sinkhole on the south side of Chicago has swallowed up three cars, one of them going down while moving. The driver of that car was injured and taken to hospital, while an owner of one of the other two cars saw his vehicle sink down and disappear.
This comes as a heavy rainstorm hit the area and a water main, described as 1915-era, broke, putting pressure upon the roadway and opening up the hole in the 9600 block of South Houston Avenue. The father of the man whose car slide into the hole while driving said his son only had "a couple of scratches."
The storm has lead to roadways being closed, schools and businesses shutting down and some 300 flights at Chicago's O'Hare International Airport to be postponed or cancelled.
The Chicago Tribune spoke to a victim of the sinkhole, local resident Ola Oni was set to leave for work at 5 a.m. and was approaching her vehicle when it disappeared in front of her very eyes. She said she is grateful she had not first gotten into the car. "I am lucky, I'm happy," she said, adding that "In this kind of neighborhood, I don't think this should happen."
Earlier this month a sinkhole in Russia swallowed three houses. Residents escaped the homes in time to avoid serious injury.
