article imageMacklemore & Lewis release phenomenal video for 'Can't Hold Us'

I first heard "Can't Hold Us" this month but it's actually been out since 2011. The single is now taking the music charts by storm. The video, directed independently by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, was released today and it's destined to become a huge hit.
Macklemore and longtime collaborator Lewis took over the charts earlier this year with their rap ditty "Thrift Shop," about a guy who shuns designer clothes in favour of buying fashion from the "...thrift shop down the road." Everyone in my family, from Grandma to the little kids, loved that song. Now their follow-up single, "Can't Hold Us," is positioned to secure this duo's place as a major player in pop music.
The video is a zany tribute to the power of positivity, and features guest singer Ray Dalton. With Dalton's smooth Motown-like voice and a large brass ensemble, the song injects a bit of soulfulness into an otherwise techno-heavy top 10 music chart.
Here are some lyrics:
Labels out here,
Now they can’t tell me nothing
We give it to the people,
Spread it across the country
Here we go back, this is the moment
Tonight is the night, we’ll fight till it’s over
So we put our hands up like the ceiling can’t hold us
Like the ceiling can’t hold us
Macklemore is heavily involved in youth charities and so it is fitting that the video for this song is child-like in many ways. Shot in six continents, it features dog sledding, a camel, people dancing on a pirate ship, and Mack flying around in a jet suit. And guess what? Not one scantily clad woman - what a change from your usual rap video. Drake could learn a thing or two from this guy.
As a side note, both my kids play the trumpet, and so we were all pretty excited to see a video that features trumpet players like Owuor Arunga and his brass band so prominently. In his 'spare time,' Macklemore is a jazz pianist and has played numerous jam sessions with Arunga:
