Washington - The annual National Sustainable Design Expo is scheduled to take place this week. Yesterday, work could be observed in downtown Washington to prepare for the 2-day event.
Each year the National Sustainable Design Expo takes place in Washington. The event features the P3 Award, which is a college competition sponsored by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
P3 stands for "People, Prosperity and the Planet." It is a competition that allows students to identify an environmental problem and showcase their ideas for a solution.
"P3 offers students quality hands-on experience that brings their classroom learning to life," notes the EPA's website. "Through this EPA program, college students can benefit people, promote prosperity and protect the planet by designing solutions that move us towards a sustainable future."
This year marks the event's 9th year, and dozens of teams will be competing. Several schools across the U.S. are represented, showcasing diverse projects and innovative ideas that promote sustainability.
This is a two-part contest. In Phase I, students competed for $15,000 grants, awarded by the EPA, which is used to research and design their projects. Phase I concludes with a report and a Phase II proposal.
The work is then brought to Washington to showcase at this week's event where judging will take place at the National Sustainable Design Expo. Winners can receive funding up to $90,000 to further develop their proposed idea with the goal to apply their solution or bring a finished product to the market.
"There are 45 competing teams that will be at the Expo this year," said Cynthia Nolt-Helms, P3 Program Manager, in an email to Digital Journal. "In addition, we have 6 returning teams who will be exhibiting as well. These are teams that won a P3 Award and received a second grant through the EPA P3 Program to continue their projects and they are coming to this year’s Expo to exhibit what they have been able to accomplish through the P3 Program."
This week the large tent that will house the Expo was being set up on the National Mall.
