article imageMaple Leafs' Phil Kessel named NHL's 2nd star with 5 goal week

By Marcus Hondro     Apr 15, 2013 in Sports
Toronto Maple Leafs' star Phil Kessel took a while to get a scoring this season but that's all forgotten now. Kessel, with 16 goals overall, scored 5 last week and doing so got him named the NHL's 2nd star of the week.
The awards were announced Monday and those 5 goals by Kessel, and his 2 assists in the week ending April 14, helped his team to a 2-0-1 record for the week, another reason he got the nod. Kessel, 25, is helping his team solidify their hold on a playoff spot as they seek their first postseason since the 2003-04 season.
Kessel scored again Monday, the winning goal on the powerplay in the third as the Leafs beat the New Jersey Devils, 2-0. Toronto now has six games left and need two more wins to clinch that playoff berth, or one win and a Winnipeg Jets loss, and Kessel is a big reason for their success.
NHL goalies: Star recognition
The first and third star of the week were goaltenders. Sergei Bobrovsky of the Columbus Blue Jackets, on a streak of being named one of the league's stars, was the first, going 3-0-0 with a .091 GAA and .971 save percentage. Richard Bachman was named third star, the first time the Dallas Star journeyman has earned a three-star nod; Bachman was also 3-0-0 and is leading his team in the hunt for a playoff spot.
