article imageNew York state teacher suspended for essay on why Jews are 'evil'

A New York state teacher could be reprimanded or terminated after asking students to write an essay from the perspective of a Nazi in Germany during the war on why Jews are ``evil.`` The Albany school district declined to name the teacher.
"This assignment for some of our students at Albany High School was completely unacceptable. It displayed a level of insensitivity that we will not tolerate in our school community," Albany Superintendent Marguerite Vanden Wyngaard said at a press conference at the United Jewish Federation (UJF) offices in Albany on Friday. Also at the press conference were representatives of the Anti-Defamation League.
Teacher on suspension for assignment
When the 3 classes of tenth-graders received the assignment from their English teacher, one-third refused to complete it. This is what the instructions read: "You need to pretend that I am a member of the government in Nazi Germany, and you are being challenged to consider that you are loyal to the Nazis by writing an essay convincing me that Jews are evil and the source of our problems."
The students will all receive an apology from a school district official, Vanden Wyngaard said, and a letter of apology would be sent to all families in the district. The superintendent said the teacher is currently on temporary suspension but did not say what punishment would be meted out in the long-term; she did say dismissal was a possibility.
"I'm deeply apologetic to all of our students, to all of our families and the entire community,`` Vanden Wyngaard said.
