article imageCongo: Soldier confessed to raping 53 women

By Owen Weldon     Apr 12, 2013 in World
A young soldier in Congo recounted the crimes that he and his comrades committed a few months back. The soldier said that he and twenty-four others got together a few months ago and said that they should rape 10 women each, and that is what they did.
According to Guardian, the solider, 22-year-old Mateso (not his real name), said that he raped 53 women, and some were kids, as young as five or six years old.
According to dailyMail, Mateso was one of the thousands of soldiers that descended on Minova, and they spent two days there killing, looting and raping before officers regained control.
According to IBITimes, Mateso also said he did not rape because he was angry. He said that he raped because it gave him pleasure. Mateso said that he met many women and he could do whatever he wanted with them.
Nzigire Chibalonza, 60, a woman who was raped by soldiers in Minova, described what happened to her in great detail, saying that she was beat repeatedly and she was raped by three men at the same time. She said her husband now mocks her and calls her the wife of a soldier, and she is rejected by him.
The news of the rapes and violence in Minova comes just hours after actress Angelina Jolie and William Hague got together and highlighted the mass rape issue in conflict zones around the world.
Jolie spoke at the G8 conference and praised the group for pledging more than $20 million to tackle warzone rape. She said that there are thousands of women being raped in places such as Congo and Bosnia.
