Madrid - The Spanish singer and actress Sara Montiel died today in Madrid of natural causes, according to sources close to the family; she was 85. Montiel is well remembered for her beauty and her pleasant husky voice.
Medical reports indicated that the artist died of natural causes. An ambulance from emergency services went to the house of the artist to try to help her, but they could do nothing for her life.
Montiel was born in 1928, in the town of Campo de Criptana, province of Ciudad Real, La Mancha, in central Spain. The actress died this morning at her home located in the Salamanca district of Madrid.
Sara's real name was Maria Antonia Alejandra Vicenta Elpidia Isidora Abad Fernández. She came to international fame by starring in the movie "El último Cuplé" (1957), and later in "La Violetera" (1958). The fees received by the actress in the latter film made her the highest paid actress in the world to that date.
Sara Montiel enjoyed great commercial success, mostly in the 1950s and 1960s, starring or participating in 60 movies. She was the first Spanish actress to achieve success in Hollywood, where she worked with some of the biggest stars of the era, such as Gary Cooper, Burt Lancaster, Joan Fontaine, Mario Lanza, Vincent Price and Charles Bronson. She had been retired from the film industry since 1975.
