An announcement was made Monday confirming that Jay-Z and Roc Nation have signed a multi-year deal with Universal Music Group.
The deal gives UMG the rights to release Jay-Z's next album along with the forthcoming records of other Roc Nation artists including Rihanna, WSJ reports.
The move also marks a return for the Hip Hop mogul to Universal Music Group. He served as president of Universal Island Def Jam from 2004-2007 and was one of the label's recording artists from 2004-2007 when his contract expired.
After departing from UMG, Hov joined forces with concert promoter Live Nation to launch Roc Nation, which includes a music label, a management company, a publishing company, and other business ventures.
Monday's announcement stated that Roc Nation will now operate as a "standalone" label with the UMG family. Financial terms were not disclosed.
UMG Chairman and CEO Lucian George said, "In just five years, Roc Nation has established itself as one of the most successful brands in music with a reputation for developing some of today's most influential and popular talent. Not only does this agreement does this agreement provide a dynamic platform for Roc Nation's exciting emerging artists, it extends our relationship with the extraordinary Rihanna and represents a homecoming for Jay-Z, a brilliant artist and entrepreneur who has been a creative cornerstone of our company. All of us are thrilled that Jay and Roc Nation chose UMG as their partners knowing we will support their artists with a level of resources, expertise, and passion that is simply unmatched in the industry."
Jay-Z said of the deal that he and the Roc Nation team were "looking forward to working with Lucian and the incredible team he's assembled at Universal. We would like to applaud to applaud Lucian for working with us to strike a new age deal." Hov is also excited at the opportunity the deal presents for Roc Nation to continue working as an independent label while also having the strength and power of one of the best major labels behind them. It's truly the best of both worlds. "I look forward to a prosperous collaboration with UMG," he said. "It feels good to be home."
The deal with universal comes a week after the launch of Jay-Z's new sports agency, Roc Nation Sports.
