article imagePhoto essay: Fuengirola, Spain — A springtime beachfront stroll Special

By Anne Sewell     Apr 7, 2013 in Travel
Fuengirola - Spring officially sprang (or is that sprung?) around a month ago, but it was hard to know it. With endless rain, cold winds and chilly nights, it seemed to have gone forever. But now, it seems spring is officially back!
Finally on Saturday the skies cleared and the sun shone down on us. The writer decided to take a beachfront stroll and capture some images.
Admittedly, the weather is still a little "dodgy", as snow can still be seen on the Sierra de Nevada in the distance. If the wind blows the wrong way, we will feel the chill yet again, but at least with the sun out, there is hope.

Of course, one of the nicest things about spring is that the beaches are almost empty. There is plenty of empty sand to set up your little camp, get the beginnings of a suntan and, of course, make sandcastles.
Some people even make sandcastles for money. These poor guys have created the most amazing mountain scenes with palaces, castles, terraces and more in recent weeks, only to see all their hard work reduced to a pile of sand by inclement weather. But they never give up, and here they are, hard at work yet again.

As we stroll along, there are many "chiringuitos" or beach restaurants to choose from, and each offers comfortable beach loungers, wind shields and even "pedalos" to take out on the water - however I would imagine the Med isn't really all that warm yet!

The ideal Sunday treat is to visit one of the chiringuitos and a enjoy a little fish barbeque with a cold beer or a fine glass of wine:

The owners are even encouraging people to give up smoking, and enjoy a glass of wine instead, but if you must smoke, here is where you can do it:

If the chiringuitos are not to your taste, there is a selection of little restaurants, bars and cafes on the other side of the road, facing the beach. You can find everything from English breakfast or fish and chips, to French crepes, or Dutch pancakes along the way, or maybe a pizza:

One thing is for sure, the next couple of months will be pleasant, warm and sunny before the real summer heat strikes in July and August, so probably a good time to plan a visit to sunny Spain!
If you prefer, spend a few nights at a charming bed & breakfast in the countryside close by and pop into Fuengirola and the beach during the day.

Oh, and on a more "natural" note, a seagull has set up her nest on the roof of the old mill, across the road from the writer's apartment - should be interesting to watch as things develop:
