article imageObama to return five percent of his salary

By Sami Zaatari     Apr 3, 2013 in Politics
Washington - President Barack Obama will give up five percent of his salary, and return the money to the treasury, in a symbolic gesture.
Obama's gesture is to show the president's solidarity with federal workers who are due to get furloughed due to the sequester budget cuts.
The president receives a salary of $400,000 a year, a 5% cut of that would come to $20,000 being given up by the president. A White House official speaking of Obama's gesture, said the following:
The president has decided that to share in the sacrifice being made by public servants across the federal government that are affected by the sequester, he will contribute a portion of his salary back to the Treasury
Obama's move comes as both Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel, and Deputy Secretary Ashton B. Carter also decided to return a share of their salaries in solidarity with Pentagon employees set to be furloughed, though their return amounts has not been stated.
