article imageZygons to return to Doctor Who for 50th anniversary

A race of aliens last seen on TV in the mid-1970s are to return to Doctor Who as part of the show’s 50th anniversary, the BBC have confirmed.
To date, the Zygons’ one and only TV appearance was in Terror of the Zygons, by Robert Banks Stewart, when they confronted the Fourth Doctor (Tom Baker) and his companions, Sarah Jane Smith (Elisabeth Sladen) and Harry Sullivan (Ian Marter), in 1975.
Today, the BBC said: “We’re delighted to confirm that the Zygons are returning to Doctor Who for the show’s 50th anniversary special.”
The announcement follows the news, at the weekend, that David Tennant and Billie Piper – a.k.a. the Tenth Doctor and his companion Rose Tyler – would be returning to the series for the anniversary special, which is due to be broadcast on Doctor Who’s actual 50th birthday, Saturday, 23 November 2013.
As reported by Digital Journal back in 2010, the Zygons are one of Tennant’s favourite Doctor Who monsters. “I still think the Zygons were a bit of a design classic. If we got [prosthetics expert] Neill Gorton onto them now we could do something pretty exciting,” Tennant said in an interview with Radio Times in 2006.
Gorton is the person responsible for all monster-prosthetic creations on Doctor Who since 2005, and has himself long argued that the Zygons are a perfect candidate for a return to the show.
Since Doctor Who’s regular return to TV screens in 2005, the Zygons have cropped up in discussions and surveys as a monster from the show’s past ripe for a return. Only last week, they were voted top on Den of Geek as the monster viewers would most like to see make a comeback. Although not seen on TV screens for almost 38 years, the Zygons remain a popular old enemy of the Doctor among the show’s fans and, in the last few years, have been name-checked on several occasions in episodes – namely, The Pandorica Opens (2010) and The Power of Three (2012).
The Zygons aren’t the only Doctor Who monster from the show’s dim and distant past to return to the series for its anniversary year. Episode 3 of the current batch of stories – Cold War, by Mark Gatiss – sees the Ice Warriors return, last seen on TV screens even longer ago, in 1974.
The current season of Doctor Who, with Matt Smith (the Doctor) and Jenna-Louise Coleman (Clara) continues this Saturday with The Rings of Akhaten, by Neil Cross (Luther).
