article imageReview: Blake Shelton soars on new 'Based on a True Story' CD

By Markos Papadatos     Apr 2, 2013 in Entertainment
Reigning Country Music Association (CMA) “Entertainer of the Year” winner Blake Shelton released his newest studio album “Based on a True Story” on March 26, 2013, via his record label, Warner Music Nashville.
His CD opens with his current single “Boys ’Round Here,” which features the Pistol Annies on harmony vocals.
It is followed with his mellifluous, chart-topping radio single “Sure Be Cool If You Did” and the moving ballad “Do You Remember.”
Equally noteworthy is “Small Town Big Time,” as well as the traditional-sounding “Lay Low” and “Country on The Radio,” where he pays tribute to George Strait, is worthy to become a radio single in the future.
In “My Eyes,” Blake collaborates with an alumna from his team on “The Voice,” Gwen Sebastian and they both soar on this duet.
Fans of ballads will surely appreciate “Mine Would Be You,” which is equal in excellence to his Grammy-nominated hit “God Gave Me You.”
“Doin’ What She Likes” is reminiscent to a quintessential vocal by Alan Jackson or George Strait.
“Ten Times Crazier” is a fun, up-tempo tune that would also fare well on country radio and his album closes with “Granddaddy’s Gun.”
The Verdict
Overall, Blake Shelton delivers on his latest studio album “Based on a True Story.” It is highly eclectic and many of his country listeners can relate to the songs on here. The standout tracks include “Mine Would Be You,” “Ten Times Crazier,” “Sure Be Cool If You Did” and “Granddaddy’s Gun.”
The CD garners an “A-” rating. The only minor downside is that it does not consist of any songs that were written by him, but he does enlist some incredible country songwriters on this project such as Rhett Akins, Dallas Davidson, Thomas Rhett, Tim Nichols, Ben Hayslip, among others.
