Morpeth - A sheep in the United Kingdom gave her owners a surprise when she birthed three lambs. One of the babies had three back legs.
On Easter Sunday a sheep named Gloria gave birth to three lambs, one of the triplets was born with five legs; the extra leg is a hind leg. The birth took place at Whitehouse Farm Centre in Morpeth, located in Northumberland.
"We knew Gloria was expecting triplets, and earlier in the day, someone had put their hand in and said they thought they could feel three back legs. We just thought it was one of the front legs in an awkward position," Heather Hogarth, a manager at Whitehouse Farm, told The Northern Echo. "When she came out, she had three legs. It was quite a shock."
Described as the most unusual birth to take place at the farm, the baby lamb was named Quinto by staff. He is reportedly doing well. He's also a hit with visitors and is attracting a lot of attention.
"They are all doing really well, they were a good healthy weight and Quinto is running about all over the place and springing about," said Hogarth.
At this time it is not certain whether or not the veterinarian will amputate the extra leg, reported BBC News.
While a five-legged lamb is a first for the Whitehouse Farm Centre, it is not an unheard of occurrence. A lamb in western France was born on Feb. 5, 2013; this lamb was the only one of four born to have the extra leg. The Daily Mail reported the fifth leg was just behind the front leg. In 2011, another lamb was born with five legs; this birth occurred in China.
