Aurora - On July 20 last year, 12 people were killed and 58 injured in a mass shooting at a cinema in Aurora, Colorado. The man indicted for this crime is now facing the death penalty.
This was the latest mass shooting in the United States, alas it is no more, having been eclipsed by the dreadful Sandy Hook Massacre. The mass murder in an Aurora, Colorado cinema needs little by way of introduction, and such is its notoriety that it has received prominent coverage in the UK, including by the BBC. Yesterday and today there were reports that the man accused of this senseless act is to face the death penalty.
Last Friday, Good Friday, Arapahoe County District Attorney George Brauchler told the judge, the court and the world "It's my determination and my intention that in this case for James Eagan Holmes justice is death".
The trial was scheduled for August but has now been delayed until next year. Holmes' legal team had previously offered a plea bargain - their client would plead guilty in return for a sentence of life without parole.
Outside the court after the hearing, Bryan Beard, the friend of a victim, welcomed the decision.
