Venezuelan prisoners open nightclub in jail with strippers, music

By Anne Sewell     Apr 1, 2013 in Odd News
San Antonio - It seems it is not always a bad thing to be a prisoner in Venezuela, as inmates of a jail have recently hosted the opening of their very own nightclub, complete with a music show and strippers.
According to the local El Universel newspaper, the opening party was attended last Thursday by friends and families of the detainees, who sent out the invitations on the social media.
The invitation read, "This Thursday, March 28 the island is making history once again, marking a pattern in the prison system, increasingly improving the quality of life of those deprived of freedom."
According to sources from the Ministry of Correctional Services, the invitation also said that the club has a capacity for 600 people, entrance was free and guests should arrive before 2 pm, and then stay until dawn. According to the prisoners, the club has all the options including "professional sound, spectacular lights, air conditioning, strippers, bad girls and all the toys."
The nightclub has been dubbed the "Yacht Club" and the prison in question is on Margarita Island in the Caribbean.
AFP reports that the situation is possible, because criminals often use intimidation and bribery to virtually take control over the jails in the country.
It seems this is nothing new for the San Antonio prison on Margarita Island, as it reportedly already has a billiard room and a cockfighting arena. The New York Times reported a while ago that the inmates openly drink alcohol, partake of marijuana and that some even stroll around with assault rifles. In fact, they appear to be able to do anything, except leave.
Reportedly Venezuela has one of the highest crime rates in the world with the country's jails housing around 48,000 prisoners, which is almost three times the official capacity of 16,500. Also 600 inmates were allegedly killed during 2012 due to violence in the jails.
