By Markos Papadatos     Apr 1, 2013 in Entertainment
Three-time world champion surfer and musician Tom Curren chatted via telephone on April 1, 2013, with Digital Journal about his new album “In Plain View,” which is expected to be released tomorrow.
Curren also opened up about his tour dates in the West Coast, where he will headline a few shows and he will open for Ben Howard, who was named “Breakthrough Artist of the Year” and “Best Male Solo Artist” at this Brit Awards (which are the British equivalent of the American Grammy awards).
Tom noted that he had a committee that helped him with the song selection process of his CD and he listed the title track as his personal favorite tune on the album. “I like the different time signatures and I love the way that ‘In Plain View’ sounds,” he remarked.
He revealed that he was working on the song “Dandelion” for a long time and noted that it was one of the first songs that he wrote back in 1994. “I had this guitar melody that I kept going back to and it was a song with a parenting theme to it and it dealt with being away from your family,” he said.
On his forthcoming tour dates in the West Coast, he remarked, “We are opening for Ben Howard and we have a few headlining dates. I will be playing acoustic shows for my supporting dates with Ben and for my headlining shows I will be playing with a full band.”
Tom continued, “I am really excited to play with Ben Howard. It’s going to be a great opportunity to play in some really nice places and I’ve heard so many great things about him. He has a really unique style. We are really happy about that.”
On balancing a music career with surfing, Tom noted that it is not that difficult. “My schedule is not that hectic nowadays for surfing so I am able to do both and right now I am prioritizing my music,” he said. “I plan on writing more music in the future and I will be doing more travelling this year. My schedule is really full.”
For aspiring musicians or surfers, Tom recommends that it is essential for them to follow their dreams. “They are both amazing and they are limitless fields to be involved in. It’s great to be a part of them. Go for it,” he exclaimed.
