article imageControversy over Golden Dawn's distribution of free food, Thasos

Golden Dawn (Chrysi Avgi) have denied media reports in the Greek press that they were prevented from distributing free food to residents on the island of Thasos.
Ekathimerini reported residents of Potomia, Thasos, carrying anti-fascism banners, prevented Golden Dawn members from distributing free food to villagers. Furthermore "the residents also prevented fellow villagers who had wanted to accept the handouts from doing so."
To Vima carried a similar report, writing members of Golden Dawn were prevented from unloading the trucks which carried food and basic necessities. Residents "discouraged" fellow villagers "who had expressed their intention to take the free food."
Golden Dawn have slammed what they claim are the false communications parroted by the Greek media from a report by the Athens News Agency. According to Xryshaygh the food distribution was entirely successful and over 100 families received a share of the 50 kilos of fish and 150 kilos of potatoes and legumes distributed.
The political party stated a small group arrived shouting abusive slogans against Golden Dawn but were drowned out by those singing the National Anthem. Polls released this weekend show support for Golden Dawn is now in double figures.
