Kites, crowds and blossom buds at Cherry Blossom Festival in DC Special

By Leigh Goessl     Mar 31, 2013 in Lifestyle
Washington - On Saturday a large crowd came out to enjoy the weather and the National Cherry Blossom Festival that is going on down on the National Mall in D.C. Saturday the annual Kite Festival took place.
This weekend the popular Kite Day took place on the National Mall.
The Blossom Kite Festival presented by the National Cherry Blossom Festival is now in its third year.
Hundreds of kites in all different shapes, colors, and sizes could be seen. On one side of the Mall, kite competitions were taking place, across the way was an open field where hundreds participated, both drawing a large crowd.
Meanwhile down at the Tidal Basin, thousands of people came out to enjoy the entertainment.
As reported earlier in the week, the blossoms' peak was delayed this year due to the recent cold snap in the area, but it looks like the blossoms will arrive at peak over the next few days as predicted. This weekend the crowds definitely came out.
While not fully opened, definite shades of pinks and whites are now visible on the trees.
The annual National Cherry Blossom Festival kicked off on March 20; it has been 101 years since Japan gifted the United States with the gorgeous cherry blossom trees that line the District's Tidal Basin.
Next weekend the National Cherry Blossom Festival highlights fireworks and the following weekend, the annual parade. But there is much going on in between. It looks as if springtime has finally arrived.
