A response from the Tanzania Red Cross Society outlines the needs of the local responders in trying to alleviate the suffering by those on the ground at the building collapse.
From the office of the Secretary General of the Tanzanian Red Cross Society (TRCS) comes a response by Raymond Kanyambo, detailing the cost of aiding those families directly impacted by the building collapse yesterday.
Mr. Kanyambo confirms that seventeen people have died so far in the collapse, and several are still missing and unaccounted for. Of the fourteen people who were rescued from the building, seven have been treated and released from hospital.
The acting Regional Coordinator is quoted:
“The search for the victims of the collapsed building went through the night and by now at least 17 bodies have been recovered. By the end of the day Saturday March 30, 2013, we expect to have recovered more causalities-live or dead.” Stella Marealle the acting TRCS Dar es Salaam regional coordinator said.
The TRCS has deployed 50+ people onsite to aid the rescue and recovery efforts. Some of the volunteers onsite are there to provide counseling and social services to the affected parties. The provision of ambulance services and first aid is also covered by the TRCS.
MR Kanyambo also confirmed there is one more building nearby being built by the same contractor and that construction site has been shut down pending an investigation into the buildings safety. Nearby resident to the second construction site have been ordered by government officials to evacuate the area.
Several government officials have visited the site, including the President, Prime Minister and MP's to assure the local residents of a resolution to the investigation.
As is nearly always the case for Non Governmental Organizations, funding is an issue. and the cost of the rescue, recovery effort will cost nearly TZS 12,040,500 (USD $7,457)
