article imageSouth Africa: Mom drives over daughter

By Matthew Hendricks     Mar 28, 2013 in World
Welkom - The unthinkable happened when Marilize Terblanche was reversing out of her garage on her way to work on that Thursday morning...
Getting ready for work, she picked up and greeted her ever-smiling daughter Erica, an infant with wild curly hair.
She said goodbye to her husband, handed the Erica to her 8 year old daughter Monique, and went to her golden BMW 320d in the garage.
Just before reversing the car outside, she saw Monique at the door to the hallway and asked where her little sister is. "In the lounge", Monique replied. As always.
Marilize drove out.
Looking back, she could see in Monique's eyes that something terrible has happened. "Mommy, she was still in the lounge just a minute ago!" Monique started crying.
Marilize got out of the car to investigate. She was greeted by the sight of the infant with the little pink dress on and the diaper showing. Face down in a pool of blood. She had accidentally run over her baby daughter.
Sitting down on the pavement, hugging Erica's lifeless body tightly, she realised Erica really is gone.
Skull fracture and head injuries were the terms on official documents. Erica had died on impact.
The 15 month old had started walking scarcely a month ago.
The family is devastated. Her husband George says he will never reproach his wife, for it could just as easily have happened to him. They both decided it will not help anymore to want to know why things like this happen.
