New York - On March 27, 2013, country superstar Blake Shelton performed for an exclusive iHeartRadio live show at the iHeartRadio Theater, presented by P.C. Richard and Son, in New York City.
Air personality Danielle Monaro from the “Elvis Duran and the Morning Show” made the opening remarks. “How many of you have seen Blake on The Voice?” she asked the audience. Danielle went on to praise Blake for his height, leading-man looks, as well as for being a “big teddy bear.”
Blake commenced his set with “Drink On It,” where he was backed by his seven-piece band and Gwen Sebastian (an alumna from his team on “The Voice”) was featured on harmony vocals.
“Hello everybody and welcome to our iHeartRadio concert. We want to do this show for you tonight to play some new music, but before I do that, I would like to do some of my older music,” Blake said and he immediately broke into “Ol’ Red.”
“Thank you,” he said graciously. “It is so awesome to be playing country music in New York.”
Prior to singing “Austin,” he noted that he had no idea that it was going to start this amazing journey for him and he went on to dedicate this song to everybody in the audience.
“Thank you all for making this my first No. 1 single,” he said.
Blake revealed that he released a new album on the previous day entitled “Based on a True Story” which consists of new material and he went on to sing “Country on the Radio,” which he dubbed as one of his favorite songs on the CD due to its lyrics. “I grew up in a small town in Oklahoma where all I had were tadpoles and country radio,” he said.
“I hope everybody knows who George Strait is. ‘The Chair’ is one of my all-time favorite songs of his and that is what attracted me to record this next song,” Blake told the crowd and he went on to sing his latest chart-topping single “Sure Be Cool If You Did.”
He noted that his third and final new song (that he was going to perform this evening), the upbeat “Boys ’Round Here” is the opening song on his new album.
The three new songs that Blake premiered on iHeartRadio were well-received and eclectic, which is a substantial indication that his new CD is promising.
“Since I just did these songs, it would be smart for me to do something for the pretty girls out there,” he said and delivered a stunning rendition of “Who Are You When I’m Not Looking,” where he showcased his softer side and soothing vocals.
“This next song puts you in a sweet mood and it’s probably the biggest single I’ve ever recorded,” Blake said referring to “Honey Bee” and the audience concurred with his statement.
According to Blake, he remarked, “Four years ago, I flew into Dallas airport, where Miranda and I had this big fight. I got into my truck and I started driving to Oklahoma and I stopped on one of those Christian radio stations and this song came on that described my life and what I was going through at that moment. It meant so much to me and it made me think about Miranda.”
He went on to sing his Grammy-nominated “God Gave Me You,” which displayed his dynamic vocal range.
“Thank you all so much,” Blake said. “Thank you iHeartRadio. See you all soon.”
For his encore, he sang another poignant and tender rendition of “Austin.”
Overall, Blake Shelton gave New York an intimate evening of country music. He sang with a lot of heart and he conveyed his love for the country genre. Blake proved that his win for “Entertainer of the Year” at the Country Music Association (CMA) awards was indeed merited, since he was able to command the stage with his heartfelt vocals and honest lyrics. Gwen Sebastian soared on backing vocals and harmonies.
