Laguna Beach - A video has emerged online showing a dog identified as an American bulldog belonging to Gabby Giffords' stepdaughter attacking and killing a baby sea lion on a California beach.
The incident reportedly happened at about 1:40 p.m. Saturday, the NY Daily News reports.
The video shows the dog gripping the sea lion in its jaws by the head. Giffords' husband Mark Kelly arrives too late to rescue the sea lion from a horrifying death.
According to the New York Daily News, the former Arizona Congresswoman, her husband former astronaut Mark Kelly, and his 18-year-old daughter were on vacation. They were staying near the Goff Cove Beach in Laguna Beach.
The 18-year-old went for a walk along the Goff Cove Beach near the Montage Laguna Beach resort with her 65-pound dog on a leash. According to the Los Angeles Times, the police said the dog spotted the sea lion during the walk and suddenly broke free from its leash.
A passer-by identified as Nathan Straw recorded the scene on his mobile phone and provided the video to the Times and KABC-TV. He said he did not realize it was the Giffords that he recorded on his video.
CBS Los Angeles reports Nathan said he was eating lunch when the animal ran up and attacked the juvenile sea lion. He captured the incident with his mobile phone and posted it to YouTube.
The video shows the Giffords' teenage daughter trying to pull the sea lion from the dog's jaws assisted by two other women. One of the women grabs the sea lion by the tail and pulls. The girl issues commands repeatedly but the dog, its jaws locked on the sea lion's head, refuses to let go,
Someone said: "Drown the dog. He will let go and swim. Trust me."
A woman hits the dog repeatedly on the face. Someone says: "The seal is already dead. There's no use in hurting the dog."
CBS Los Angeles reports Nathan recalled: "It was pretty much just panic. People didn't know how to act when a dog of this size just locked down (and didn't let go)."
Mark Kelly, Gifford's husband, finally arrives at the scene and holding the dog by the collar he shakes the sea lion free. It falls into the water, limp, with blood oozing from its neck.
According to Nathan: "Mark Kelly came over and picked the dog up by the collar, shook it, called the dog out by name, and that's when the dog released. Mark Kelly was able to walk the dog back to the parking lot."
The video shows fresh blood dripping from the dog's teeth as Kelly leads it away from the beach.
The police reportedly received a call at 2 p.m. and found the sea lion. Captain Jason Kravetz confirmed in an email to the Los Angeles Times that the animal died and was removed from the beach. The police said the family will not face charges because no laws were broken. According to the Daily Mail, a spokeswoman for Kelly's political committee said the family crated the dog but the police did not issue citations.
Kravetz said: "It was legal for her to have the dog on the beach this time of year, and she did have it leashed. It was so strong that it pulled free of her when it saw the [sea lion]."
NY Daily News reports Nathan commented: "If you have a dog of that stature and that power, they should be accompanied by someone who can handle a dog that is as powerful as an American bulldog."
