The beautiful Grace Kelly became famous in the 1950's as an American film star. Then she left Hollywood to marry Prince Rainier III, and become princess Grace of Monaco.
Now, Nicole Kidman gives life again to Grace Kelly on the silver screen.
Grace Kelly met Rainier in 1955 during a photo shoot in the Pink Palace.
He was six years her senior and urgently looking for a wife, as without an heir, his princedom would become part of France after his death and the Monegasque would have to pay French taxes.
Grace was from a wealthy family, and marrying her would also attract tourism to Rainier's princedom.
Grace underwent a medical examination to confirm that she could give birth to an heir.
In 1956 the "wedding of the century" took place between Rainier III and Grace Kelly, and 30 million people watched it on television.
After the wedding, Prince Rainier banned the exhibition of Grace Kelly's movies in Monaco.
Grace Kelly and Rainier III had in total three children, Caroline, Albert II and Stephanie; and two miscarriages in 1962.
At age 52, Grace Kelly was in a car accident with her daughter Stephanie, and died after from a stroke.
"Grace of Monaco" is a new movie starring Nicole Kidman as the blonde Grace Kelly.
The script was listed in the 2011 Hollywood Black List of the most liked unproduced screenplays of the year.
In typical modern Hollywood fashion, "Grace of Monaco" paints a darker, depressing picture in the tradition of depicting things as not being the wonderful fairytale people always thought something is. Albert, Caroline and Stephanie therefore call it "pure fiction".
But the producers insist it's based on truth as told by sources in the palace. Their story depicts a very lonely Grace who realised too late she had married a control freak who treats her as a trophy.
In the movie, Rainier III is not supporting of his wife, seldom at home, and when he is home they sleep in seperate rooms. Grace wanted to leave after six years of marriage, but because the children would likely be staying in Monaco if she divorced Rainier, she dropped the matter until her death.
"Grace of Monaco" is directed by Olivier Dahan, and will be released starting Christmas 2013 and next year.
