article imageIndyCar: Hinchcliffe starts season with win in Florida

By John Duarte     Mar 24, 2013 in Sports
James Hinchcliffe wasted no time in getting his sophomore year in IndyCar racing off to a great start as he won the opening race of the IZOD IndyCar Series season, in St. Petersburg, Florida.
“We are really excited,” Hinchcliffe said of his first career win. “We fought hard for this one. We earned it.”
Hinchcliffe had a good rookie season in 2012, when he was on the podium twice, had five Top 5 finishes and eight races in the Top 10. The Canadian driver said before the race that “Hinch 2.0 needs to be better in several areas including restarts” to be successful this season.
“I was asked what it was going to make us a winner and I knew we would have to minimize mistakes,” Hinchcliffe said, and that is exactly what he did.
Hinchcliffe jumped into the lead on Lap 85, when he got past Helio Castroneves on the final restart of the 110-lap race. From there, Hinchcliffe maximized his car and stayed out in front for the final 25 laps of the race. Castroneves finished second in the Honda Grand Prix of St. Petersburg and Marco Andretti finished third. The podium finish was a sweet one for Andretti, who got past Simona de Silvestro on the final lap of the race.
It was not the start to the 2013 season defending series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay would have liked. He started the race eighth on the grid, but was forced to retire early due to mechanical problems.
The second round of the IZOD IndyCar Series will be run on April 7 at Barber Motorsports Park, in Alabama. The Indianapolis 500 will run on May 26 and the 2013 IndyCar season ends on Oct. 19 in Fontana, California.
