article imageSyrian opposition source to Israel -- Rebels no threat to you

By Paul Iddon     Mar 24, 2013 in World
Following a brief escalation on the Israeli-Syrian Golan Heights frontier an opposition source has stated that Israel should not be concerned about serious threats to its security.
When its troops were fired upon on the Golan Heights the Israeli Army rapidly responded by firing a Tamuz guided missile across the border at a Syrian Army machine gun nest. This once again raises concerns in Israel over the volatile situation in Syria near its own frontier with that country along the Golan Heights. (NY Daily News, March 24 2013)
IDF Chief of Staff Benny Gantz aptly stated that, "We have witnessed a difficult reminder of the explosive reality along the border with Syria."
He went on to say that,"The firing at IDF forces this morning was enough to endanger our forces which is why we had to attack and destroy the post where the shots were fired from. We will continue to act at this level to maintain peace. The IDF is prepared for any eventuality."
However a source quoted in the Israeli press this morning quotes a Syrian opposition source which contends that Israel shouldn't be concerned for its security once Assad falls -- Israel has in the past expressed serious concern over the instability Assad's fall will pose and the possibility his chemical weapons stockpile will fall into the hands of extremist groups.
The opposition source in question contends that, "The rebels, especially the 'Free Syrian Army' will not be any threat to Israel after Assad falls from power as they will have to focus on rebuilding the country and will mostly be dealing with Syria's internal matters - and that is something which will take a while."
On the issue of the potential rise of Islamic extremists, something President Obama expressed concern about in his recent visit to Jordan, the source states that, "In general Syrians are not concerned by these operatives [Islamists fighting with the ragtag rebel opposition] because when the regime falls their role will be over and they will search for a new arena."
On the issue of chemical weapons, which Israeli officials are very worried about the source asserted that, "The rebels have complete awareness of the dangers these weapons hold." (Ynet News, March 24 2013)
