article imageCIA supporting Syrian rebels with intelligence

A report in the Wall Street Journal has claimed that the CIA has been providing intelligence to members of the Free Syrian Army to help them in their fight against the Syrian regime.
The report cites former and current US officials who claim that the CIA are helping select and vetted rebels.
One of the main purposes behind this is to stem the influence of the more radical elements within the Syrian rebel movement, such as the Nusra Front, which has been designated as terrorist organisation.
Other reports have already come out on how western countries in neighbouring Jordan have been training the more moderate and secular elements within the Syrian resistance.
The US recently signed a new aid package deal for the Syrian rebels, that came short of providing them with weapons, the latest package would offer the rebels food, medical supplies, as well as more logistical support.
European nations France and Britain meanwhile have been lobbying for rebels to be supplied with arms. Both nations failed at a recent EU summit of foreign ministers in Dublin, with the EU rejecting their proposals of lifting an arms embargo on Syria. France and Britain though, have threatened to act unilaterally with or without EU support.
