article imageInterview with Robert Reynolds of The Mavericks Special

By Markos Papadatos     Mar 21, 2013 in Entertainment
On March 21, 2013, Robert Reynolds, the multi-instrumentalist from the country group, The Mavericks, chatted via telephone with Digital Journal about their new album (which was released via the Valory Music Company), as well as their tour and reunion.
The Mavericks consists of Raul Malo, Robert Reynolds, Paul Deakin, Eddie Perez and Jerry Dale McFadden. “We love to play together in the studio and we love playing live,” Robert remarked. “Our fans are the greatest reason that we got back together. We all heard their love and support and we are back together in their incredible honor.”
On the song selection process for their album, Robert stated, “Raul realized that something special was happening and he responded by finishing some songs that had been sitting on the back of his mind. There are some really beautiful ballads on this CD. I think they are exceptional. I love ‘Come Unto Me’ for its power, especially in the live shows.”
The Mavericks reunion was extra special for Robert. “It meant a lot in my heart since there was a possibility that we wouldn’t do it again and I couldn’t control whether or not anybody else felt that way. We were reminiscing about the value of The Mavericks since our song catalogue was so close to us,” he said.
Their In Time album release party took place at the Bowery Ballroom in New York City this past February. “That was phenomenal,” Robert acknowledged. “This is our reunion tour and this is our full-fledged return. New York had so much energy so that venue was really special for us. It was like a homecoming in a weird way since it’s an industry city.”
Throughout their career, The Mavericks have won a Grammy award for “Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal” for “Here Comes The Rain” and they were named “Top Vocal Group” by the Academy of Country Music (ACM) in 1994 and 1995, as well as “Vocal Group of the Year” by the Country Music Association (CMA) in 1995 and 1996. “These honors were very magical. We did not expect them and they were symbolic that we had arrived,” he said.
Robert revealed that he would love to hear his band perform a duet with such acclaimed songstresses as Emmylou Harris and Alison Krauss. “Emmylou is such a great singer and she is so earthy and honest. Alison is a really good one too,” he shared. “Martina McBride opened for us a while back and then we opened for her. It’s one of those funny collaborations. Raul and Martina sing really well together.”
