article imagePediatricians’ group: Marriage equality is good for kids

By Owen Weldon     Mar 21, 2013 in World
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) announced on Thursday that it supports marriage equality for couples who are the same sex. Children develop normally, without any complications, when "parents have a commitment to shared parenting."
The AAP released a statement on Thursday, saying that marriage is in the best interests of kids who live in households that are headed by parents of the same sex, according to RawStory.
The report's introduction said that all kids need support and nurturing from stable and well functioning adults in order to become effective adults. The report went onto say that kid's well-being is affected more by their relationships with their parents, their parent's sense of security as well as the presence of social and economic support for the family than the sexual orientation of their parents.
According to Washington Post, officials who are with the group said that they wanted to make the AAP's views known before the U.S. Supreme Court considers two gay marriage cases next week.
According to Huffington Post, the AAP now joins the ranks of other major medical organizations with policy statements supporting same-sex marriage, which includes the American Medical Association.
As of now there are around three million lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender parents in the United States, according to the Family Equality Council.
