article imageOp-Ed: 10 compositions to celebrate 328 years of Johann Sebastian Bach

By Andrew Moran     Mar 21, 2013 in Entertainment
Eisenach - Legend. Visionary. Romantic. Genius. These are certainly the terms to describe Johann Sebastian Bach, an 18th century German composer and musician (harpsichordist, violinist and violist). Today is his 328th birthday; it's time to remember his music.
No matter what the season is, your mood, the weather outside or the type of situation you are in, any Bach piece can accompany the scene. Whether it’s the autumn breeze that is felt in a late summer evening, the heartache that ensues following a breakup or the relaxation that comes with drinking a coffee and reading a Fyodor Dostoevsky book, completing a crossword or writing a play, the music of Bach can fit into almost anything.
Although his music was considered to be old-fashioned towards the end of his life, the likes of Ludwig van Beethoven, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Frederic Chopin and Felix Mendelssohn had revived his divine, pretty and complex compositions.
It is estimated that Bach had composed 1,120 works, plus many fragments, bits and pieces. These works included chamber music, organ and keyboard works, canons, fugues, orchestral music, chorales and many more.
Attempting to describe his music would prove superfluous and perhaps even insulting to the calibre of such a man. With that being said, here are, in my opinion, the top 10 (in no particular order) compositions produced by one of the greatest men that ever lived.
Double Violin Concerto in D Minor: 1st movement, Vivace
"Air" Orchestral Suite No. 3 in D Major: BWV 1068
Prelude & Fugue No. 2 in C minor
Toccata and Fugue in D minor: BWV 565
Harpsichord Concerto No. 1 in D Minor: BWV 1052
Concerto for four Harpsichords in A Minor: BWV 1065
Violin Sonata No. 5 in F Minor: BWV 1018
Goldberg Variations (harpsichord): BWV 988
Cantata BWV 140
Cello Suite No. 1 in G Major: BWV 1007
