article imageOp-Ed: Cypriots protest financial diktats from the Fourth Reich

By Katerina Nikolas     Mar 19, 2013 in World
Nicosia - Cypriot protestors tore down the German flag from atop the German Embassy in Nicosia on Monday evening, amid demonstrations against the depositors tax levy which Cypriots blame on Germany.
Europe Online reported protestors carrying banners proclaiming "No democracy" vented their anger at Germany over the proposed bank deposit levy tax.
As Digital Journal reported Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades has earlier revealed he was blackmailed into accepting what was a "previously made decision, a fait accompli." Anastasiades had categorically dismissed the notion of a bank levy during his recent electioneering. According to the Wall Street Journal "Nicosia appears to have been taken entirely by surprise when presented with an ultimatum at Friday's Eurogroup meeting in Brussels."
All fingers appear to point to the levy being the brainchild of German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble who of course attempts to deny the charge, blaming instead the ECB, the European Commission and the government of Cyprus. However, the Slog reports "ECB board member Joerg Asmussen rejected Schäuble’s accusations, saying “In the last days it was not the ECB that pushed for this special structure that was chosen, it was the result of the negotiations in Brussels.”
Of course Schäuble wasn't pushing for the current proposal of two tax levies, the top one being 9.9 percent; he personally favoured and pushed for a tax levy of 40 percent. His cunning plot met with the approval of Frau Merkel. Bloomberg reported she expressed her satisfaction with the levy by saying “It’s right that we went down that road," even though the road involves an unprecedented flouting of the government deposit insurance scheme.
Financial diktats, whether they be crippling austerity measures or now government sanctioned theft in the form of forcibly snatched taxes, appear to always emanate from Berlin. They are superimposed on blackmailed sovereign nation governments that have been bled of any democracy and instead resign themselves to handing their citizens over to the diktats of the Fourth Reich.
